Crunch time

Come, little leaves, said the wind one day.
Come over the meadows with me and play;
Put on your dresses of red and gold;
Summer is gone, and the days grow cold.

--George Cooper

All right, so it's not officially autumn yet. And it's still pretty warm outside. And we've yet to bust out Cardigan One.

But I've never claimed to be a patient woman and I am officially In Denial of Summer. That beach-scene nature table is coming down tomorrow, and we're just going to toss some acorns and who knows what else on a brown cloth and dig out the orange-hatted gnomes.

I also love this season because it heralds the approach of Ezra's birthday, which means that we get to do all sorts of really wholesome red-cheeked harvest-type craziness as if in preparation for the day.  He'll be six this year, and I've been too caught up in life to even give consideration to marking this occasion. In this past year, I've very much reverted back to my old Waldorf ways, so I'm thinking of making something for him. I know he'll be inundated with plastic nonsense, but that's all the more reason for me to try to put a spark of something simple and loving in his childhood memories. I'm also thinking of getting a Birthday Ring which will be an heirloom I can use for Isis as well, up until 2017.

What the heck, let's have another poem. My sister Hazel can't read Emily Dickinson without hearing "The Yellow Rose of Texas" in her head, but I think you just can't beat these verses--- especially for kids.

The morns are meeker than they were---
The nuts are getting brown---
The berry's cheek is plumper---
The Rose is out of town.
The Maple wears a gayer scarf---
The field a scarlet gown---
Lest I should be old fashioned
I'll put a trinket on.

I gave up on summer long ago. Autumn just has just a nice bite to it. Maybe I should make a nature table too with brown cloth and acorns and such.

Yes! Make dem Nature Tables! Really, I get obsessed with ours. I now have this fixation with miniature. Don't let me near a miniature mushroom... I will appropriate it for The Cause.

Oh it's autumn for me! I figure Beltaine is the start of Summer and really Lughnasad heralds it's end and the beginning of the harvest (although it still feel so much like summer at that point!)

Samhain is the beginning of winter (the turning point of the year) and indeed, this ties in with the later Martinmas being seen as a traditional start to winter (when livestock was slaughtered).

I see Imbolc/Candlemass as the beginning of Spring - it may still be cold but the snowdrops are out here.

Our nature table is always work in progress, typically with lots of stones and feathers that are picked up on our walks (although they have been joined by acorns of late).
